Curio rowleyanus variegata

Curio rowleyanus variegata is the variegated form of string of pearls, with trailing stems carrying round succulent leaves marked in green, cream, and pale yellow tones. The spherical beads create a soft marbled pattern that stands out clearly in hanging planters.

Because the pale leaf sections have reduced green tissue, this plant grows at a measured pace and benefits from steady bright light, careful watering, and a root zone that dries cleanly. Its growth remains trailing and bead-like, with stems that can be trimmed and rooted to refresh the crown over time.

Curio rowleyanus variegata key details

  • Variegated string-of-pearls succulent with round, fleshy bead-like leaves
  • Green, cream, and pale yellow patterning across trailing strands
  • Fine stems that spill from hanging pots or creep across the substrate surface
  • Measured growth linked to pale variegated tissue and fine trailing stems
  • Clear green, cream and pale yellow patterning when the crown and strands receive even light

Curio rowleyanus variegata colour, form and background

Curio rowleyanus is native to South Africa’s Cape region, where the species grows as a creeping succulent in dry, bright habitats. The variegated form keeps the same water-storing bead leaves and trailing stems, while the patterned foliage benefits from stable light and a careful watering rhythm indoors.

Individual leaves are rounded with a small pointed tip and a narrow translucent line. In containers, new growth starts from the crown before the stems lengthen and trail. A bright top surface, a breathable substrate, and careful grooming help maintain a fuller plant as the strands mature.

Curio rowleyanus variegata care notes

  • Light: Give Curio rowleyanus variegata very bright indirect light with gentle morning or evening sun. Strong, even light supports compact growth and balanced colour.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly after the substrate has dried through. Constant dampness can soften the fine roots and crown.
  • Substrate: Build a sharply draining succulent mix with a high mineral content. Pumice, grit, lava rock and coarse sand help keep oxygen around the fine roots.
  • Hanging display: A hanging pot, shelf pot or raised planter with drainage suits the trailing crown. Leave the crown open enough for airflow after watering.
  • Temperature: Keep it warm and stable, ideally around 18–27 °C. In winter, hold temperatures safely above 10 °C and avoid cold windowsills.
  • Humidity: Average home humidity is suitable. A lightly airy position helps the crown dry evenly after watering.
  • Feeding: Give cactus or succulent fertiliser at low strength every 6–8 weeks during active growth.
  • Pruning: Prune uneven strands to encourage a fuller shape. Remove fully green reverting shoots before they dominate the crown.
  • Propagation: Lay stem cuttings on gritty substrate with node contact. Variegated cuttings need steady warmth and patience while roots develop.
  • Repotting: Change the substrate when it becomes compacted or water stops moving evenly through the pot. Handle the strands carefully to reduce bead loss.

Curio rowleyanus variegata issues and checks

  • Mushy pearls: Check for lingering moisture, a cold root zone, or dense substrate. Remove soft stems and restart firm cuttings if the crown is affected.
  • Deep shrivelling: Check both dryness and root health. A dry, healthy plant firms after watering; damaged roots leave beads wrinkled after a soak.
  • Weak top growth: Increase light to the crown and rotate the pot. Give the top of the pot enough brightness to support new stems.
  • Scorched pale tissue: Keep the plant away from hot direct sun through glass. Variegated leaves mark easily under heat stress.
  • Loss of variegated balance: Prune fully green strands back to the crown if they begin to dominate the plant.

Curio rowleyanus variegata placement notes

Curio rowleyanus variegata should be kept away from pets and children. Curio rowleyanus is toxic if ingested, and sap may irritate sensitive skin. Wash hands after pruning and keep fallen beads away from curious animals.

Curio rowleyanus variegata cultivar and species name

Curio rowleyanus variegata is a variegated cultivated form of Curio rowleyanus in the family Asteraceae. In this genus, Curio is commonly linked to Latin curiosus, meaning “curious,” and the epithet rowleyanus honours Gordon Douglas Rowley, a botanist recognized in succulent botany. The word variegata refers to the plant’s patterned foliage.

From a bright shelf or basket, Curio rowleyanus variegata forms cascading strands of marbled pearl-like beads.

Won't last forever, but my dog loves it
Size: X-Large, Color: Giraffe
My dog, a 90 lb black lab, LOVES these toys. He does prefer the raccoon to the giraffe, but he likes them both a lot. I originally got the raccoon on clearance at Target when looking for a long toy he could play with while he was in a cone recovering from surgery (he likes to be able to hold toys between his front paws and mouth/chew on them, so none of our regular squeaky footballs were long enough for that). He loved it so much I had to find more, so I found this giraffe from the same line of toys. He's a destroyer and he has been able to put a few holes in these toys if I'm not watching him, but they're pretty easy to sew if they need patching. My mother-in-law's dog came over and made a hole so big that the squeakers and lining all came out, but I sewed it back up and it's almost as good as new. They definitely won't last forever, but they have lasted longer than other soft toys we've had in the past.

My dogs favorite
Size: Small, Color: Bunny
I need this toy! It is my dogs favorite. She even takes this on walks. Ive replaced this on 3 times because it was “eaten” by my daughters dog. I keep it put up and Georgia constantly goes to the spot I keep it and is expecting me to give it to her. Please restock soon

My doggo's go-to toy!
It's not the most durable of toys (she's on her third in five years) but I will buy her as many as she needs because she is OBSESSED with it!
